On Monday night at Wolverhampton's Molineux Stadium, Wolves U21 took on the Premier League International Cup Champions, PSV U21, in a Premier League International cup group stage match. Wolves made their debut in the competition. As most would agree, this was a vital moment to make a statement to everyone watching.
The half started quickly for Wolves with a strong header attempt from Kam Kandola that sailed just above the crossbar. Wolves new signing Tawanda Chirewa did well to put his creativity on display by orchestrating the attack on several occasions. Chirewa had two attempts at goal, but none were able to beat PSV's keeper, Kjell Peersman. Both keepers did well to end the half goalless.
The second half started with good build-up play from Wolves. Chirewa received the ball in the midfield and played a threatening reverse pass to Nathan Fraser, who struck the ball wide of the near post. Then, in the 72nd minute Wolves were finally rewarded for their efforts. Enso Gonzalez's corner delivery found Kam Kandola, who soared above his opponents to head the ball into the bottom left corner, giving Wolves the 1-0 lead. Less than 8 minutes later, Wolves' Nathan Fraser struck again from another corner to double their lead, making it 2-0.
As the final whistle approached, PSV's hunger to win did not falter. With only 5 minutes left to play, PSV's Tai Abed received a stunning through ball into Wolves' box. He cut onto his favored right foot, giving him just enough space to curl a shot into the side netting. Understandably the tension rose, the score was now 2-1. Wolves keeper, Joe Young was able to rise to the occasion. Young performed two acrobatic saves in the dying minutes of the match to secure the 2-1 victory for Wolves.
